YAW

The Young Artists Workshop was great fun this past season.  

Children ages 5-12 participated and produced lovely works.  

Here are some highlights (with excerpts from the weekly family updates):

Color Mixing

"We had a great time Saturday.  The children learned about primary, secondary and tertiary/intermediate hues and then practiced color-mixing and built a color wheel. Their work is now dry and will be ready to go home next class.

Next Saturday, everyone will design their own marbled paper for use in another upcoming project.  They will aslo finish designing the postcards that they started on the first day (everyone took one home this week for practice and at-home play as well as a color-mixing chart to further practice color-mixing, if they wish to do so.)"

Paper "Making"

"This past Saturday, everybody designed their own paper using pie plates of tempera paint and soap suds.  The children practiced their color mixing skills as well as dexterity (it is not easy blowing those bubbles!).  This coming Saturday we will begin printmaking, using last week's paper designs as background."

Printmaking

"The past two weeks have been full of printmaking.  On February 25, the children designed several printing plates; some consisted only of cardboard and Elmer's glue while others incorporated deeper relief elements in the form of beads and pasta.  Those who finished these two plates moved on to literal plates: soft Styrofoam on to which they drew with ball point pens.

This past Saturday, the entire class headed down to the IUS print studio where our assistant and graduating printmaking major, Miranda Becht, demonstrated a relief print (photos below).  Then, back in our own studio, everyone painted their various "plates" and pressed them onto the paper that they had previously designed with soap and paint bubbles or shaving cream and paint.  The prints are drying and will go home this coming Saturday.

It has been great to watch everyone move through three-week process: designing paper, designing printing plates and then making final prints."

 

Coil Pots and Mosaics

"The past two Saturdays have been full of mosaics and pottery as the children built images and coil pots.  The pots are drying and the mosaics are in various states of completion."

Dream Catchers & Tree Looms
