The New Year

Let it spin, let it spin, let it spin!

Straight Jacket

Ruby has autism, we've decided.  A 3T sweatshirt is his version of Temple Grandin's "Squeeze Machine":
He is totally calm when he wears it.  No nipping or pacing.  Chill.

Charles LeDray

From Fiber Arts, Winter 2010/2011
The scale of LeDray's works (1:5) compels me - the woman standing over the clothes racks exemplifies my ego.  Why do I tower over all of creation?  Who am I to NOT drive on vegetable oil?  How I pick and choose what I want from the world.  I want to be small again.  I want to fit into the world - to move within it.  I am removed.

I Can't Stand It!

D.I.Y. Louisville

Kristen is having her baby today and so Desmond (in the back) is spending a few days with us.
Maddy is over, too.  It's a full house tonight.

A great new site/concept:

And a feature on The Weather Up Here:

What do you think?

I am going to their next get-together on December 14 - let's all go!
Here's the text on the event from the site:

D.I.Y. Events

Tuesday, December 14 at Sunergos on Woodlawn in Beechmont.  This is the one off of Southern Parkway, not the one in Germantown.  We will be doing our handmade ornament exchange this night.  Just bring an ornament that you made wrapped up and we will exchange them.  Not into making an ornament, then just join us for some crafty time or chatty time. 6-9pm.

Barbie Reads!

I found Barbie this afternoon stuffed into the bookshelves.
Naked, of course.
Every girl needs a little enrichment now and then.

Leonard Koren

The design guru, Leonard Koren, wrote a primer on Wabi-sabi that I had my 3D students read, in part.  As one student reiterated the material:
all things impermanent
all things imperfect
all things incomplete

Stools

These are on loan from my godmother - I am going to have them copied.  The hunt for the right fabrics will fill a chilly Saturday afternoon. . .
Today, we inherit my mom's sofa (she is still alive and well in Old Louisville; she wants to clear out space for a studio so that she can begin to paint again.  Or to read while thinking of painting.  A journalist once asked Picasso if he could observe him at work in his studio.  Picasso granted permission.  On the appointed day, the journalist arrived and settled into a corner of the studio to observe the master at work.  For most of the morning Picasso just read, shuffled items on his table, or stared into space.  After several hours, the journalist wondered aloud if perhaps he should return when Picasso would be actually working to which Picasso replied, "I've been working all morning!"  Process, process, process.)

21c

The Artist Market at 21c Museum Hotel was lovely.  Jenna was with me for most of the day (she has been posting some incredible work to her blog lately:  http://jennaleighrichards.blogspot.com/
We spent the day beneath a silver tornado,
beside Hound Dog Press: http://hounddogpress.com/ - I have a HUGE crush on Hound Dog Press.  Their papers and prints are old timey, distinct, beautiful.  I am going to commission them to print my signage for future markets.
A selection of Weather Up Here bowls will now be in the 21c Museum Hotel lobby shop as well as online: http://shopat21c.com/

Embark!

Sarah came over to play with Finn yesterday so that I could work in the studio.  She brought with her these colored pencils.  She found them in Mexico:
Chunky and indelicate.  You have to use your whole hand to draw with them.

Knee Deep in It

Here is a sampling of some of the colors that will be available at the Market at 21c this Friday (Black Friday), November 26 and at Winter Fair December 3-4.  Yes?  No?

Machine?

They say it is a machine.  An Ultimate Knitting Machine.  I say it is a quirky clunky hand loom for fast generic knitting.  I kinda-sorta love it.  It's ugly.  It's plastic.  And it requires a steady hand and continual attention.  I kinda-sorta love it because it possesses some potential for me and my practice that I cannot yet see.
